Mayor’s Task Force member,  Dr. Kristine Matson conducted a study titled  “A Qualitative Study of Young Adult Heroin Addiction”.   Northfield News’ writer, Suzanne Rook,  discussed Matson’s study and wrote about the numbers of people treated at Northfield’s Opiate Addiction Clinic in this article.

NHS’s Marnie Thompson discusses Student Survey

Proposed Social Host Ordinance in the News

The Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Alcohol and Drug Use supports the passage of the proposed Social Host Ordinance.

Mayor’s Task Force Member Kathy Cooper was quoted in this Northfield News article “Social host ordinances taking shape–slowly.”

From the article:  “The most significant role [of the ordinance] is its role as a prevention measure,” said Northfield’s Kathy Cooper, coordinator of the Rice County Safe Communities Coalition. “We want to prevent huge parties occurring that are conducive to alcohol abuse.”

The Northfield News also printed this editorial encouraging the city to help kids make the right choices in regards to alcohol.  The editorial concluded with:  “Let’s all help kids make the right choice when it comes to underage drinking. The city can do its part by passing and enforcing a social host ordinance.”

Residential Extended Care facility discussed on KYMN

MTFYADU’s co chair, Joan Janusz, and Executive Director of West Hills Lodge, Jody Anderson, discussed the new residential extended care facility slated to open soon in Northfield.  This facility will serve women, aged 18 plus, who are in recovery from substance abuse.  The interview can be heard here.

MTFYADU supports “Fall Activity Night” at NHS

Northfield’s Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Alcohol and Drug Use joined with the “Brent Setterstrom Memorial Fund” and  Northfield’s Healthy Community Initiative in sending three Northfielders to the American Athletic Institute’s “Life of an Athlete” program last June.

The three Northfielders then spoke at the Fall Activity Night on August 17 for all Northfield High School (NHS) fall athletes and their families.  NHS Activities Director Tom Graupmann introduced the three Northfielders:  Scott Richardson, Northfield Healthy Community Initiative board member;  Melissa Bernhard,  head coach of NHS’s state champion gymnastics team;  and John Sand, NHS teacher and athletic trainer.
